Kids & Cabinet Damage - What Finish Do I Pick?

One of the frequently asked questions I get from families that have kids or are expecting kids is:

How will my brand new cabinets hold up against my kids running their toys into them?

Will painted cabinets hold up as well as stained cabinets made from solid wood?

I can certainly respect this question because a kitchen is a very big decision/investment and the last thing you would want is for your brand-new kitchen to be devalued and look bad in short order due to kids ramming trucks into them.

To properly address this question we need to take a few things into consideration.

Firstly, what type of finish is being used on your new cabinetry?

Many painters (and cabinet companies) use products like latex, oil-based paints, and spray lacquers. While these finishes do have their place they do not hold up well on cabinetry.

With latex and oil-based paints ketchup and other common kitchen products that spill will actually sink into these finishes leaving unclean-able stains.

With lacquer finishes, we have found many kitchens where the finish is flaking-off around high moisture areas such as by the sink or dishwasher.

We go the extra mile to use a premium Catalyzed Conversion varnish on all of our cabinetry which holds up incredibly well against household condiments and moisture.

Secondly, ask yourself what look and feel do you want?

Painted? Clear Coated? Stained?

If you could have any finish and there was no risk of damage what would you pick?

What do you love?

There are beautifully painted and stained options available and I always encourage people to pick what they love because it needs to fit you and what you desire to have.

One cool thing about our company is that we have expert finishers that can touch up a lot of the things life throws at your cabinets (including your kids) if something were to happen.

When it comes to touching things up it is actually easier to touch up painted products because you can simply respray the entire door or drawer front whereas with stained it’s a more artistic approach of hand coloring with pigments and dyes.
